Today, during a brief sojourn into the timesink known as Facebook, I realized something.

I turn 23 this year.

Yes, yes. I'm not that old. But heck, 23. The next "big date" is 40. Then, assuming people still retire in 2050, 65.

The year is 2008 and I am turning 23. It is the crappin' future and I still drive a rusting Dodge Spirit that DOESN'T fly. Alcohol, the once forbidden fruit, is now an occasional vice for slow evenings and gatherings.

Good things, of course. I am growing into a mature and responsible adult. Instead of Linkin' Park, I listen to NPR (and UK indie bands: yay People in Planes). If all goes well, I'll be married by this time next year (still waiting for that job). There is growth in these things. Especially Linkin' Park (Minutes to Midnight was terrible).

I've also discovered that my parents were mostly right. Dangit.

(Four years of education and a degree in journalism and I cannot spell sojourn. This is sad.)

A package arrived last week that excited me to no end. Every day I tracked its progress across the country. I beat the UPS guy to my door.

What did it contain? Business cards. It was a package of business cards.

I keep a small stack in a metal case in my back pocket. Just in case I, you know, need one.

In other news, I have a bad knee and feel various amounts of satisfaction in the upkeep of my yard. Seriously.

Oy! You're younger than I am. Of course, I write poetry discussing how I am a grumpy old otaku, so what do you expect? ^_^;;

I'm having my girlfriend design me my third set of calling cards. (I don't have a business, so they aren't business cards.) I've never been particularly interested in drinking, and I've always listened to NPR and classical music. On the up side, both my knees are good an I've managed to avoid having a yard to keep up.

People who are still in their 20s are not allowed to claim that they are old.

In completely unrelated news, people in their 30s are young.

I'm only old when it comes to being an otaku. *shakes his fist at all of the young whippersnappers*

A story:

My girlfriend is a Dr. Who fan from way back in the day. In fact, she's partially named after an original-series companion. She is also not much of a fan of the new series, although she doesn't think that it's bad. She was recently getting annoyed at some fans who clearly know nothing but the new series and think that the airheaded, more-useless-than-normal Rose is the One True Companion and that David Tennant is the best Doctor EV-AR when she stopped and thought, "Oh my God, this is how Alan must feel about anime all the time" and felt very sorry for me.

It would be interesting to see the AMRN demographics. I wonder if the ratio of younger to older players has significantly changed over the years. I started when I was, what, 15? 16?

So many memories. So much terrible prose.

I also turn 23 this year and i know somewhat how you feel.

I also started here when i was 15-16...oddly my writing skills have degraded since then. At least in my opinion.

I started when I was 21, nine years ago. Of course, I haven't really played since 2004, so...

(Wow that's a long time. I hadn't realized how long. I suppose many of you who started playing after me have easily passed my five-year run by now.)

I turn 29 in two weeks, I started on the mrn sometime around 1997, give or take a year... I was in high school but I can't remember what grade. I agree with Heather, 30 is young. I did a "moderate" hike with my parents yesterday, that involved 6 miles of horizontal distance, about 2500 feet of elevation gain (net, gross felt more like 3-4 miles), and the two of them (age 55 and 52) were able to keep more or less with me, so, 20 something is definitely not old.

Anyone in their early-twenties--and you are in said range until 24, at which time you enter your "mid-twenties"--complaining about their age needs a good beat down to help force some perspective.

I joined just a few months after Heather, so you can do the math. But I am one year older than her. Yes, that's right, I am now "in my thirties"... I think that puts me in a different demographic.

Kids... I swear!

For those of us in the Americas, Here's how it breaks down:

16, You can get your driver's liscense and zoom zoom zoom there you go.

18, You can buy cigarettes, pornography, Lottery ticketts, be tried as a adult, legally change your name (So for those of you who had hippie parents who named you Mayflower, that error can be corrected, just remember that when you think about naming your first born son "Raistlin") You can join the army, get into several bars, and (if your male) Be drafted to serve in the armed forces.

21, You can Buy booze. Nuff said

25, A minor thing, but your Car insurance rate usually drops, unless you took Speed Racer to heart.

65, You can Retire. (Though anymore you may not be able to afford it)

So it's easy to see how after 21 you can start to see the Long downhill slope towards the next big event. But I turned 30 This past December, Woke up in the morning...went to the mirror, all my hair was still there, it hadn't turned gray, my hand's hadn't shrunken and gotten shriveled like skeletor hands, and I still had the same number of wrinkles around my eyes I had the night before.

So Currently Age is just a number, A way to keep track of how many years you've had to learn new things. Doesn't matter if you have what the Jones' have, where all those you went to school are at, just do what you have to, and enjoy the ride.

If you can make every new experience, good bad and or ugly, into a lesson learned, then your winning. (Though I admit a limosene, million dollars and a pony do sound kinda like fun prizes)

There's my 2 Yen...And I got nothin else.

Actually you can join the arm forces at 17, you just need your parents permission to do so at that time. I only know because I joined when I was 17 and there someone else who was 17 in basic with me.

Damn, seems I'm the young'un' here. I'm 22 until March rolls around next year, and still at Uni. I don't believe a person turn 'old' until said person stops having things to look forward to, even something silly like your car insurance dropping.

I started here when I was... 14? 15? Way back in 2000, with bad grammar, spelling and everything else. Hell, my first character was a Mary Sue (hooray for the Otaku phase). Maybe my grammar and spelling has matured with me? I think that's still up for debate (the spell checker always catches silly words like anxiety for me yet I can write a term paper for astronautics without a ping.)

Turned 25 this year. I was back in HS when I first started here (either junior or freshman).

Oh, the memories.

hey az, hey melkor...

I miss the rebel days... and other games as well.

You know, I wonder if it would be possible to somehow get a Frontier game up and running. Not sure the series would be conducive to it though... *shrug*

good to see you guys though!

I'd imagine you could... might have to do something like M12, i.e., make it a sister fleet to Frontier. I don't think it's possible now, though... maybe back in the golden days.

Hah! I haven't thought about the CLA in ages... good times (even if it crashed and burned).
